What is a Naíonra?

A naíonra (plural: naíonraí) is an Irish-language preschool or playgroup for children aged approximately 3 to 5 years. The leader — known as the Stiúrthóir — speaks exclusively in Irish with the children, using a method called Total Early Immersion. Prior knowledge of Irish is not required.

Information about naíonraí, ECCE eligibility, and operator organisations may change. Verify current details with Comhar Naíonraí na Gaeltachta or your local City and County Childcare Committee.

How Naíonraí Work

Naíonraí are typically delivered as sessional services — up to 3.5 hours per day. The curriculum draws on established frameworks including Síolta (Ireland's National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education), Aistear (the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework), and Irish-language specific frameworks such as Lonnir and Borradh.

The defining feature of a naíonra is the Total Early Immersion approach: the Stiúrthóir speaks only Irish, encouraging children to develop a natural understanding of the language through play and routine before formal schooling begins.

Who Runs Naíonraí?

Naíonraí operate throughout Ireland, in both Gaeltacht and non-Gaeltacht areas. The primary support organisation for Gaeltacht naíonraí is:

Comhar Naíonraí na Gaeltachta (CNNG)

Established in 2004 by Údarás na Gaeltachta, CNNG operates 130+ early years services across Gaeltacht regions, including naíonraí, crèches, after-school care, and breakfast clubs.

Many naíonraí also operate independently or through local voluntary committees. Contact your local City and County Childcare Committee (CCC) to find naíonraí in your area.

ECCE Eligibility

Tusla-registered naíonraí that participate in the ECCE free preschool programme can deliver 15 free hours per week of Irish-language early education.

ECCE age eligibility: your child must have reached 2 years 8 months by 31 August of the programme year, and must not be older than 5 years 6 months by 30 June of the same programme year.

Age criteria are set by the DCEDIY and may change. Verify at citizensinformation.ie.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to speak Irish to attend a naíonra?

No. Naíonraí use Total Early Immersion — children do not need any prior knowledge of Irish. The Stiúrthóir speaks exclusively in Irish, and children naturally acquire the language through play, song, and daily routine.

Is a naíonra covered by the ECCE free preschool scheme?

Yes, provided the naíonra is Tusla-registered and participates in the ECCE programme. Eligible children receive 15 free hours per week of Irish-language early education. Ask the naíonra directly whether they offer ECCE places.

Do I need to live in a Gaeltacht area to send my child to a naíonra?

No. While CNNG operates mainly in Gaeltacht regions, naíonraí also exist in urban and non-Gaeltacht areas. Contact your local City and County Childcare Committee to find naíonraí near you.
